Movement and step-by-step instructions

Plan and trace movement with position, direction and turns.

Original Kidemy beginner self-study unit · Learn the idea, try the practical activity and review your written answers. Review your project with a guardian or teacher using the criteria below. Teacher-led course approval and booking are separate.

Learn the idea

A movement instruction depends on both position and facing direction. Forward changes position in the direction the robot faces. A right or left turn changes direction without moving into another square. In the grid below, row 1 is at the top and column 1 at the left.

Worked example

Start at column 1, row 5, facing east. Forward twice reaches column 3, row 5. Turn left to face north. Forward twice reaches column 3, row 3.

  1. Write the start square and facing direction.
  2. Apply a turn without moving the robot.
  3. Trace each forward step and check the boundary.

Try it step by step

This is a practice model. It does not change your Kidemy coins or school grades. Use the buttons to test one instruction at a time.

The result depends on the current position and facing direction.

Check both state details; the command alone does not identify an absolute square.

A route with a turn

Use the grid or paper squares to reach the target. Record the commands and ask a partner to follow them.
