Sensors, conditions and loops

Use sensor conditions and repetitions to describe safe robot behaviour.

Original Kidemy beginner self-study unit · Learn the idea, try the practical activity and review your written answers. Review your project with a guardian or teacher using the criteria below. Teacher-led course approval and booking are separate.

Learn the idea

A sensor reports a value or state. A condition uses it to choose an action. A loop can repeat the check. A robot should not keep moving blindly when its model says the way is blocked. A paper sensor card can represent clear or blocked during practice.

Worked example

Repeat: check the front sensor. If clear, move forward one square. Otherwise, stop. Before another step, read the sensor again because the surroundings may have changed.

  1. Read the sensor before choosing a branch.
  2. Give both clear and blocked cases a defined action.
  3. Repeat the check rather than reusing an old reading forever.

Your written practice

stop

The blocked branch stops movement.

loop

A loop repeats the instructions.

yes

The environment may have changed.

Write in your own words. A guardian or teacher should review this response.

If the edge sensor reports an edge, stop; otherwise, move one small step and check again.

Use a paper simulation, not an unsupervised physical edge test.

An obstacle may appear after planning, so the robot needs current information.

Check that the explanation connects sensing to changed conditions.

You are the sensor

A partner shows clear or blocked cards while you follow a paper robot rule. Swap roles.
