Joined letters and vowel marks

Recognise joined letters and the three basic short vowel marks.

Original Kidemy beginner self-study unit · Learn the idea, try the practical activity and review your written answers. A qualified Quran teacher must review your reading and recitation. Teacher-led course approval and booking are separate.

Learn the idea

A short vowel mark guides the vowel after a consonant. Fathah is written above, kasrah below and dammah above in a small curved form. Follow the letter and its mark together. The patterns here are reading drills, not quotations from a Quran verse.

Worked example

بَ is ba, بِ is bi and بُ is bu. The consonant stays bāʾ while the short vowel changes.

  1. Identify the consonant.
  2. Locate the vowel mark and name it.
  3. Use a teacher’s model to read the combined pattern without inventing an extra long vowel.

Read and compare

Roman and Bangla guides are approximate aids. A qualified teacher should demonstrate the Arabic sounds and review your reading.
