Sukun, shaddah and tanwin

Distinguish sukun, shaddah and tanwin in beginner reading patterns.

Original Kidemy beginner self-study unit · Learn the idea, try the practical activity and review your written answers. A qualified Quran teacher must review your reading and recitation. Teacher-led course approval and booking are separate.

Learn the idea

Sukun indicates that a consonant has no following short vowel at that point. Shaddah indicates a doubled consonant. Tanwin is shown by a doubled vowel mark and introduces an n ending in connected reading; stopping rules need teacher guidance. These are drill patterns, not verse quotations.

Worked example

بْ carries sukun. بَّ carries shaddah with fathah. بٌ carries dammah tanwin. Read each according to its marks with a teacher.

  1. Look for the mark before attempting the pattern.
  2. Do not add an extra vowel after a consonant marked with sukun.
  3. Ask your teacher to distinguish connected reading from a pause.

Roman and Bangla guides are approximate aids. A qualified teacher should demonstrate the Arabic sounds and review your reading.
