Geometry, measurement and trigonometry readiness

Combine bearings, trigonometry and geometric reasoning.

About this lesson and its coverage

Original Kidemy O Level progression. This level has its own text, examples and questions. Curriculum versions share the progression; complete board-specific coverage still needs specification matching and additional material.

Learn the idea

Bearings are measured clockwise from north using three digits. A right-triangle ratio requires a right angle. Similar shapes and circle theorems require correspondence conditions; a diagram’s appearance is not proof.

Worked example

Due east has bearing 090°. In a right triangle, tanθ=opposite/adjacent. Opposite3 and adjacent 4 give tanθ=0.75.

  1. Identify the quantities and restrictions.
  2. Show a method with units or symbols.
  3. Check and explain the result.

Apply the idea

Draw a bearing problem and solve its lengths using a labelled right triangle.

Review with a guardian or teacher

  • Use the stated evidence or givens.
  • Show reasoning rather than only a result.
  • Review and explain one correction.
