Listening and taking speaking turns

Listen for key details, respond and ask for clarification.

Original Kidemy beginner self-study unit · Learn the idea, try the practical activity and review your written answers. Practise spoken delivery with a teacher or proficient listener. Teacher-led course approval and booking are separate.

Learn the idea

Listening means following the other person’s meaning. Wait until they finish, identify one important detail and respond to it. If you miss a word, ask politely for repetition rather than pretending to understand.

Worked example

A: I like drawing birds. B: You like drawing birds. Could you tell me which bird you like most?

  1. Listen for the person, action and important detail.
  2. Use Could you repeat that, please? when needed.
  3. A useful follow-up stays on the same topic.
