Writing explanations and short paragraphs

Write a short explanation using a reason and relevant evidence.

Original Kidemy beginner self-study unit · Learn the idea, try the practical activity and review your written answers. Practise spoken delivery with a teacher or proficient listener. Teacher-led course approval and booking are separate.

Learn the idea

An explanation connects a statement with a reason. Because introduces the reason. In a paragraph, keep the main idea and related details together. Evidence must come from the given information or an observation, not an invented certainty.

Worked example

“The plant bent towards the window. It may have been growing towards the light, because the window was the main light source.” May have marks the interpretation as a possibility.

  1. State what happened or what you think.
  2. Add a relevant reason or clue.
  3. Use may when the evidence does not make the explanation certain.
