Subject vocabulary and mathematical language

Use mathematical and subject vocabulary with the correct meaning.

Original Kidemy beginner self-study unit · Learn the idea, try the practical activity and review your written answers. Practise spoken delivery with a teacher or proficient listener. Teacher-led course approval and booking are separate.

Learn the idea

A sum is the result of addition; a difference is the result of subtraction. Product belongs to multiplication and quotient to division. Units explain what an amount measures.

Worked example

The difference between 18 cm and 11 cm is 7 cm. Write the unit because 7 by itself does not tell the reader this is a length.

  1. Choose the operation from meaning, not a keyword alone.
  2. Keep labels and units with the numbers.
  3. Explain the calculation in a sentence.
