Electricity, magnetism and circuits

Use charge, stored energy and series/parallel capacitance in an ideal model.

Original Kidemy further-topic investigation. This optional lesson is shared by related upper pathways; select suitable depth with a teacher. It does not certify complete grade or board coverage.

Learn the idea

Capacitance C=Q/V compares stored charge with potential difference. Stored energy is QV/2. Parallel capacitances add; series capacitances combine reciprocally. These equations describe ideal components; no physical high-voltage experiment is required.

Worked example

For C=2 μF and V=10 V, Q=20 μC and stored energy0.0001 J. Two2 μF capacitors in parallel give4 μF; in series they give1 μF.

  1. Convert prefixes.
  2. Identify the arrangement.
  3. Check charge, voltage and energy units.
