Build an interactive story or game

Plan a short interactive story or game with meaningful choices.

Original Kidemy beginner self-study unit · Learn the idea, try the practical activity and review your written answers. Review your project with a guardian or teacher using the criteria below. Teacher-led course approval and booking are separate.

Learn the idea

An interactive story changes according to an input. Plan the scenes, choices and outcomes before coding. A useful choice changes something that the player can understand. Explain the rules and test every path; a beautiful screen alone does not make a working game.

Worked example

A story begins at a fork. Choosing bridge leads to a treehouse; choosing path leads to a pond. Both outcomes should have a clear next action or ending.

  1. Draw each scene as a box.
  2. Label each choice and connect it to an outcome.
  3. Follow every arrow to check for a missing scene.

Build a word from three letter cards. The round ends when the word is checked and its meaning is explained.

Check a clear task and a defined end condition.

A two-choice story

Create a paper prototype with a start scene, two choices and an ending for each path. Let a partner play.
