Grammar, sentence structure and editing

Edit agreement, tense and clause structure without changing meaning.

Shared cross-level core and stretch unit. Start with the core questions, then use the stretch example for deeper work. The same unit is available in related class and board pathways; it is not a full grade-specific or examination-specification course. A teacher should select the appropriate depth and further topics.

Learn the idea

The subject controls verb agreement. A finite clause contains a verb showing tense. Connect independent clauses with suitable punctuation or a conjunction; a comma alone often creates a comma splice. Check whether your edit changes the time or the relationship between ideas.

Worked example

The pupils was tired, they finished the task. → The pupils were tired, but they finished the task. The plural subject needs were; but expresses the contrast.

  1. Find the subject of each clause.
  2. Check verb form and time.
  3. Choose a connection that preserves the intended meaning.

Stretch example

Having finished the report, the computer was switched off. This dangling opening implies that the computer finished the report. A clearer version is: Having finished the report, I switched off the computer.
