Speaking, listening and presentation

Prepare a clear presentation and respond to what a listener actually asks.

Shared cross-level core and stretch unit. Start with the core questions, then use the stretch example for deeper work. The same unit is available in related class and board pathways; it is not a full grade-specific or examination-specification course. A teacher should select the appropriate depth and further topics.

Learn the idea

Speaking needs a purpose, structure and audible delivery. Listening means identifying the speaker’s main point and checking a detail before responding. A summary should represent the speaker fairly, including an important condition or limitation.

Worked example

Speaker: “We could meet on Friday if the library is open.” Accurate summary: The proposed meeting is Friday, depending on the library opening. Saying “The meeting is definitely Friday” drops the condition.

  1. Plan an opening, two points and a conclusion.
  2. Listen for conditions and evidence.
  3. Ask a focused clarification before answering.

Stretch example

In a discussion, distinguish a challenge to an idea from a personal criticism. A fair response may concede a valid point and then explain where the evidence is incomplete.
