Vocabulary and language in context

Use word parts and context to work out a meaning.

Original Kidemy Class 6 progression. This level has its own text, examples and questions. Curriculum versions share the progression; complete board-specific coverage still needs specification matching and additional material.

Learn the idea

A prefix changes a base word’s meaning; a suffix can change its word class. Check the full sentence before choosing a synonym. A dictionary meaning that does not fit the context is not a useful replacement.

Worked example

The path was unsafe after the storm. Un- changes safe to not safe. “She handled the fragile cup gently” suggests fragile means easily broken.

  1. Read the text and identify the purpose.
  2. Support your answer with a specific detail.
  3. Revise meaning, structure and accuracy.
