Learn the idea

Area counts square units; perimeter measures boundary length. Convert units before combining quantities. A graph’s key and scale determine its values. Time intervals crossing an hour need a timeline or a conversion to minutes.

Worked example

A rectangle 8 cm by 5 cm has area 40 cm² and perimeter 26 cm. A journey from 9:35 to 10:20 lasts 25+20=45 minutes.

  1. Label the requested measure.
  2. Read units and scales.
  3. Check that the answer matches the context.

No. A 2×6 rectangle and a 3×4 rectangle both have area 12, but perimeters 16 and 14.

Use valid dimensions and both perimeter calculations.
