Class 11 · English Version · English

Paragraphs, essays and functional writing

Build a focused paragraph and develop a reasoned argument.

Shared cross-level core and stretch unit. Start with the core questions, then use the stretch example for deeper work. The same unit is available in related class and board pathways; it is not a full grade-specific or examination-specification course. A teacher should select the appropriate depth and further topics.

Learn the idea

A paragraph develops one main idea with explanation and relevant support. An essay needs a clear overall position and a purposeful sequence. Functional writing also needs its audience, purpose and format: a request email differs from a literary essay.

Worked example

Claim: A shaded reading corner would help our class. Reason: pupils could read comfortably at break. Evidence to collect: how often the current corner is too hot. This plan separates a proposed benefit from evidence not yet collected.

  1. Identify audience and purpose.
  2. Order claim, reason and support.
  3. Revise for cohesion and an appropriate tone.

Stretch example

A balanced argument can acknowledge a cost: A reading corner needs maintenance, so a small pilot with a care rota may be more workable than buying a large structure immediately.
