Networks, internet and digital safety

Explain a network request and choose practical privacy protections.

Shared cross-level core and stretch unit. Start with the core questions, then use the stretch example for deeper work. The same unit is available in related class and board pathways; it is not a full grade-specific or examination-specification course. A teacher should select the appropriate depth and further topics.

Learn the idea

A network links devices using communication rules called protocols. A domain name can be resolved to a network address before a connection is made. Encryption protects data in transit, but it does not prove a website’s claims are honest or prevent the recipient from misusing data after receiving it.

Worked example

A browser requesting a learning page may resolve its domain, establish a secure connection and send an HTTP request. A padlock indicates a protected connection to that domain, not an endorsement of its content.

  1. Identify sender, recipient and data.
  2. Explain the role of the protocol.
  3. Share only data needed for the task.

Stretch example

A threat model names assets, possible attackers and likely paths. Separating authentication (who you are) from authorisation (what you may do) helps prevent a signed-in user accessing someone else’s records.
