Equations, patterns and functions

Translate a simple statement into an equation and a sequence rule.

About this lesson and its coverage

Original Kidemy Class 6 progression. This level has its own text, examples and questions. Curriculum versions share the progression; complete board-specific coverage still needs specification matching and additional material.

Learn the idea

An unknown stands for a number satisfying the statement. Apply the same operation to both sides. For a linear sequence, a constant difference helps form a position rule, but check the first term as well.

Worked example

3x+2=20 gives x=6. Sequence4,7,10 has rule3n+1 for positions n=1,2,3,...

  1. Identify the quantities and restrictions.
  2. Show a method with units or symbols.
  3. Check and explain the result.

Apply the idea

Make a short number sequence, state a rule and check three positions.

Review with a guardian or teacher

  • Use the stated evidence or givens.
  • Show reasoning rather than only a result.
  • Review and explain one correction.
