Learn the idea

A mixed number has a whole-number part and a fractional part. Convert to equal denominators before combining fractions.

Worked example

1 1/2 = 3/2. Adding 3/2 and 1/4 gives 6/4 + 1/4 = 7/4.

  1. Read the example and explain which rule or evidence it uses.
  2. Try each task yourself, then compare the answer and its reason.
