Learn the idea

A mixture contains substances together. Filtration can separate an insoluble solid from a liquid; evaporation can recover some dissolved solids.

Worked example

Sand can be filtered from water. Salt dissolved in water can be recovered by supervised evaporation; never taste laboratory mixtures.

  1. Read the example and explain which rule or evidence it uses.
  2. Try each task yourself, then compare the answer and its reason.

Show model answer and explanation

filtration

Sand particles are trapped while water passes through.

Show model answer and explanation

evaporation

Water leaves as vapour and salt remains.

Show model answer and explanation

yes

The liquid water can be frozen again.

Take it further

Apply the idea in a new situation and explain your method. Open writing needs a guardian or teacher to review it.

Show model answer and explanation

magnet

A magnet can attract iron filings.

Show model answer and explanation

evaporation

Evaporation removes the solvent while salt remains.

Write in your own words. A guardian or teacher should review this response.

Show model answer and explanation

Dissolving mixes salt particles through water. Melting would change solid salt itself into liquid salt.

Distinguish a solution from a state change; this is a paper explanation, not a heating experiment.
