Learn the idea

Read what is known and what is being asked. Use place value in written operations. Equal groups connect multiplication and division. A fraction needs equal parts of a defined whole. A final number without its unit or explanation may not answer the question.

Worked example

Four boxes contain 6 pencils each. Total = 4×6 = 24 pencils. Sharing 24 among 3 children gives 8 each. Half of the 24 pencils is 12.

  1. Write the operation before calculating.
  2. Show a check or drawing.
  3. State the answer with its unit.
