Learn the idea

Line up the places. Ten ones have the same value as one ten. Regrouping changes the way a number is shown, not its value.

Worked example

47 + 28: 7 + 8 = 15 ones. Write 5 ones and carry 1 ten. 4 + 2 + 1 = 7 tens. The answer is 75.

  1. For 52 − 18, exchange one ten: 52 becomes 4 tens and 12 ones.
  2. 12 − 8 = 4 ones; 4 − 1 = 3 tens. So 52 − 18 = 34. Check: 34 + 18 = 52.
