Learn the idea

Singular means one; plural means more than one. Many plurals use -s or -es, but some change inside the word. Words such as teacher can describe a person of any gender.

Worked example

one box → two boxes; one child → two children; uncle → aunt

  1. Box needs -es; child has the special plural children.
  2. Uncle and aunt are family words. Do not change teacher or doctor to invent a gender word.
