Learn the idea

Multiplication can count equal groups. An array arranges objects in equal rows and columns. Always say what each number counts.

Worked example

There are 3 rows of 4 dots. 4 + 4 + 4 = 12, so 3 × 4 = 12.

  1. Count the 3 rows. Check that every row contains 4 dots.
  2. Four rows of 3 also total 12, but describe the pictured arrangement accurately.
