Learn the idea

A fraction describes equal parts of a whole. The bottom number counts all equal parts; the top number counts the parts chosen. Unequal slices do not show fair halves.

Worked example

One of four equal parts is 1/4. To find 1/4 of 12 counters, make 4 equal groups; each has 3.

  1. Check that the parts are equal before naming the fraction.
  2. For a fraction of a set, share the whole set equally first.
