Learn the idea

Length measures distance; mass tells how much matter an object has; capacity tells how much a container can hold. Use the same unit before comparing.

Worked example

A ribbon is 32 cm long. Cut off 8 cm: 32 − 8 = 24 cm remain.

  1. Centimetres are useful for a short ribbon. Kilograms are useful for a bag of rice.
  2. Litres describe the capacity of a bottle. The number alone does not tell the unit.
